Makarska

The Makarska Riviera is part of the hinterland of central Dalmatia, stretching approximately 60 km in length and 3 km in width. Nestled between the slopes of a mountain (1,762 m) and bathed in sunshine for more than 2,700 hours per year, with an average temperature above 20°C, the Makarska Riviera is a true Mediterranean paradise.

The beautiful blue sea boasts an annual average temperature of 20°C, while in the summer months, sea temperatures range between 25°C and 27°C. Winters are mild and sunny, and summers are long and warm, accompanied by a refreshing sea breeze that brings natural relief during the hotter days. Other winds include the “bura” (a cold north wind) and the warm, moist southern wind, which is especially popular among lovers of water sports such as sailing and surfing.

The center of the Makarska Riviera is the town of Makarska, which is surrounded by a series of picturesque villages. To the northwest are Brela, Baška Voda, Promajna, Bratuš, and Krvavica. To the southeast lie Tučepi, Podgora, Drašnice, Igrane, Živogošće, Blato, Drvenik, Zaostrog, and Gradac.

During the tourist season, each town along the Makarska Riviera hosts various cultural, entertainment, sports, and recreational events. These include traditional folk festivals celebrating local patrons and historic events. Popular festivities also include “Fishermen’s Nights” and other events held on beaches and hotel terraces.

In Makarska, all events are organized under the program “Makarska Summer.” The most famous events include the “Fishermen’s Night,” the “Summer Carnival,” and the “Night of Kalalarga.” There are also many other performances, ranging from entertainment to classical music, featuring well-known bands, singers, and folklore groups from both Croatia and abroad. These typically take place in Kačić Square, along the waterfront, and at other scenic venues such as the Church of St. Peter on the peninsula.
